Autism Spectrum Alternative Program

Autism Spectrum Alternative Program (ASAP), a 501(c)3 organization, is a powerful, effective, equine facilitated sensory integration program for children with alternative learning abilities, (ALA) and children affected by various emotional and developmental disorders including but not limited to autism & autism spectrum disorders.

Our mission is to help families respond to the social and emotional needs of their autistic children in a positive and sensitive manner. Our sensory integration program utilizes equine facilitated therapy, color, sound and art therapy, with a continuing education program to provide families with tools and techniques to encourage open communication between the children, their parents, their community and the world.
ASAP in action is understanding and communicating with children anywhere on the autism spectrum. Accepting the fact that every child has alternative learning abilities, it is our goal to discover learning capabilities outside of the traditional classroom environment and then identify and develop those abilities through sensory integration activities. It is our objective to provide opportunities for alternative learning experiences with our program so that we may better understand and respond to each child's needs.

ASAP has developed a unique program incorporating the Color Corral, our equine facilitated riding program with the Rainbow Room, our color and sound therapy room, to create the foundation of our communication program. Communication techniques are then taught to the parents through our parent education program, called Solutions, so that they may continue the process at home. Support of our program would provide the financial foundation needed to continue to implement this program and open our doors to many more students.  The children can choose their activities each session giving them a relaxed, fun opportunity to communicate. Our goal is to give them as many choices as possible in their activities encouraging self expression and self awareness. Watching them, observing their patterns, their preferences and their choices give us keys to their constantly changing views of themselves and the world around them. Our objective is to collect these keys to establish a foundation for personal learning styles and communication skills. By using complementary treatment modalities such as our equine facilitated therapy, our Rainbow Room, the Butterfly Swing, our labyrinth, our Peaceful Pyramid, and yoga, our program may be integrated into anyone's lifestyle. Enhancing our program through scholarships would enable us to serve more families about these safe, natural, drug-free treatments for children with alternative learning abilities.

Most of the inappropriate behaviors of autistic children are triggered by their reactions to different sensory stimulation and situations in society they cannot understand. Sometimes their reactions are hypersensitive or hyposensitive, too much or too little. Our goal is to observe their reactions to various situations, giving us the opportunity to gather information to select the tools needed to respond to a situation instead of reacting to it. Our objective is to teach families techniques they can use to create and maintain a balanced, calm and nurturing environment. Some of these techniques include yoga, sound and color therapy, diet choices, exercise and workshops for continuing education. These techniques will make us better equipped to find the solution, not just discipline the behavior. We feel strongly that our unique, innovative program is very effective for many families. Sponsorship of our program would allow us to continue research and provide continuing education to the families.

Our program focuses on early intervention accepting children as young as one and a half years old. With early intervention we have accomplished significant strides in communications skills and behavioral responses as well as overcoming many physical and emotional challenges. Our students are successfully integrating into classrooms with their non autistic peers, talking, reading, spelling and participating in sports that they were not able to do initially. They are learning self confidence and building relationships with tools and techniques that will last a lifetime. This highly individualized curriculum combined with continuing education for the families is a powerful combination with effective, long lasting results.
